On Wednesday, August 18, 2010, our Bethany Beach Town Council hosted Gabriel Daube, Mayor of Périers, France as the two towns joined together in the act of "Twinning" or "Sister Cities".  Shown in the picture to the right from left to right are Councilpersons, Jerry Dorfman & Jack Gordon, Mayor Daube, Mayor Tony McClenny, Vice Mayor Carol Olmstead & Councilpersons, Lew Killmer, Joe Healy and Margaret Young.

Town Council and many members of our various Town committees, Planning Commission and Boards welcomed the Mayor of Periers, France, his wife, and three others as we celebrated the "Twinning of our Towns".  We provided them with a tour of Town, a tour of Fort Miles, a key to Bethany Beach, a lovely picture of our Town Clock and boardwalk area and two books regarding our history.   Following a bandstand performance in their honor by the Milford Community Band, we introduced them to blue crabs.  We as a group were very pleased to meet our new friends from across the ocean.  The picture above represents the new sign we will install on Garfield Parkway.

Both the Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral on Labor Day at 5:30 p.m. September 6, and the Jazz Funeral Silent Auction at 3 p.m. on Friday September 3 are free to the public and all are encouraged to attend, the assistant chairpersons said.

Besides enjoying the fun of the 25th end-of-season celebration, attendees will be in for a musical treat, according to Jazz Funeral Musical Director John Strawley.

Our annual Town election will NOT take place on Saturday, September 11, 2010 in Town Hall from noon to 6:00 p.m.  Here is the public announcement made early this morning.

"Charles “Chuck” Peterson today announced that he is withdrawing from his campaign to run for Town Council in Bethany Beach.  According to Chuck, when he registered to run he was under the impression that one or two of the incumbents were not interested in running for another term.  Since all of the incumbents have decided to run again, this is obviously not the case.  Chuck says that he has no significant disagreements with the policies of the current Council and does not see the logic of forcing the cost and effort of an election if all the incumbents are willing to continue to contribute their time and effort to the Town.  “I can still influence the direction of the Town from my position on the Planning Commission, Budget and Finance Committee and Charter & Ordinance Committee.” Chuck wants to thank everyone who supported him and encouraged him to run this year and wants to assure everyone that he will run again when there is a vacancy that needs to be filled."

We just received notice that the Federal Government has responded to our request for beach replenishment funding in the amount of $8.3 million.  Tony Pratt (DNREC) is currently in Louisiana, but has been in touch with us by telephone to begin plans to schedule the work.  Additional information will be provided as available.

The Town Council authorized the purchase of mobi-mats for each beach crossover and three for Wellington Parkway (handicap access).  As we lost our handicap crossover at Ocean View Parkway due to dune damage, we increased the number of handicap parking spaces at Wellington.

GOOD NEWS!  DNREC has responded to our request for assistance with the cost of the “Mobi-Mat” mats with a grant of $45,000 - a big help as we spent $90,000 for the purchase.  The Mat can be rolled and stored off season, should be extremely hard to steal (but not impossible) and best of all makes the crossovers much easier to use. Storm repair for beach access would only involve moving sand not the custom cloth/clay underlayment that has proven to be impossible to maintain.

The Town just received a grant from DNREC for $25,000, which will be used for two projects:  to replace the Comfort Station hot water heater, which is expected to save the Town almost $400 per year in energy costs and to replace the Town Hall HVAC and exterior lighting, which is expected to save the Town almost $1,800 per year in energy costs.

David T. Kane, of Mediacom, has announced that on or about September 1, 2010 their "Family Cable" monthly rate will increase from $57.35 per month to $59.99.
